Vanilla Pudding

2/3 c sugar
4 T cornstarch
¼ t salt
4 c milk
4 egg yolks, slightly beaten
4 T butter, softened
4 t vanilla

Mix sugar, cornstarch, and salt in 4-quart saucepan. Stir in milk gradually. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils. Boil and stir 1 min. Stir in at least half of the hot mixture into egg yolks. Blend into hot mixture in saucepan. Boil and stir 1 min. Remove from heat; stir in butter and vanilla. Cool.
